My name is Paul Oehm and I’m The Biz Coach. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and share a little bit about my history. I’m a 55-year-old serial entrepreneur who grew up in a small town in an entrepreneurial family, living and breathing business. My father was an incredible entrepreneur. He was a farmer, a feed dealer and owned a hardware store. He was a great teacher and mentor and instilled in me a great work ethic and business acumen from a very young age.
My official entry into the world of business began around the age of 7. My father had 6000 laying hens and when I was 7 years old, I began pick eggs for him. I loved picking eggs but I also had other business ventures in mind that I wanted to try. To free up my time, I decided to sub contract the egg picking to my friends, paying them about 75% of my wage, and pocketing the balance to invest in my other businesses. My friends and I loved the outdoors and spent lots of time outside biking and fishing. I spent lots of time with my dad, always watching and learning. Through him I learned not only about running a business but also about how to fix and build things. I capitalized on this knowledge and seized an opportunity to start a business buying used bicycles and rebuilding them into cool chopper-style bikes which I sold to my friends. I also picked dew worms in the garden at night and sold them to tourists and local fishermen. I took time after school and on Saturdays and worked in my dad’s businesses learning from him for many years.
By the age of 18 I had bought and sold over 30 bicycles, motorcycles, cars and trucks. I had raised over 100 head of cattle and ran a house painting business, employing my friends to paint houses over the summer. I worked on local farms driving tractor, haying and doing barn chores, worked in al local service station.
I started my first real business at the age of 20 in 1983. I grew this business from nothing to over three million in annual sales within three years in the 1980’s, when farmers were paying 20% interest. Very challenging times.
My businesses have generated over $100 million in sales over the past 35 years. I have gone through many ups and downs over the course of starting, scaling and selling these businesses. I am a graduate from the school of hard knocks and I have street smarts.
Over the course of running my businesses I always put my family first. I was married for 25 years and have been divorced for 7 ½ years. We raised three amazing children who are now in their twenties, building their own lives and pursuing successful careers. I have always been very involved in my community. I spent years giving back as a hockey coach and I was involved with my local chamber of commerce.
I’ve always have been addicted to learning and personal growth. I have read hundreds of business and self-improvement books and I have taken dozens of courses and seminars over the years. I graduated from Agricultural College with a diploma in Agricultural Business Management. I also have another Certificate in Business Management. I completed Tony Robbins Mastery University and I participated in coaching from E-Myth Mastery with Michael Gerber.
Business coaching is my passion and I really want to help people succeed. I love working with people and I want to share what I have learned over the years. I understand what it takes to start, scale and sell a business. I know first-hand about the many problems that business owners can go through and despite all good intentions, over 90% of small businesses fail before their 10th anniversary.
The most important lesson I have learned is to work ON your business and not IN your business and to create systems within a business that work. Business owners need to start with a clear vision of what the end of their business ownership looks like and build a solid plan on how to get there.
There are only four ways to get out of a business:
My ultimate goal is to help business owners accomplish #4. I help people formulate a clear vision of the life of their business, and coach people on how to implement a plan to achieve their identified goals. I coach business owners on how to put systems in place to drive their vision toward reality and to propel the business forward, scaling it and ultimately making it saleable. With proper systems in place, business owners can have the time and freedom to live the life and lifestyle they desire for themselves and their families. An investment in my coaching services offers tremendous value for business owners. Let’s work together through personal coaching and/or through my Business Bootcamp and drive your business toward its full potential.
